What our Instructors and Students say

Ian Cleveland

The FBMA weekender gives me a rare opportunity to teach a group of enthusiastic martial artists, some of whom will then be teaching me in return. Over the six years I have been going there has been over 20 different mats to train on giving me the opportunity to train with and get to know some of the best martial artists in the country. I have been training nearly 40 years and come away with something new every time.

Adam Barlow

The FBMA training camp has become one of the highpoints of the year at our club. The instructor line up never fails to deliver variety and quality. Our students have benefited enormously by being exposed to a wide range of martial artists and helping out with coaching duties at the event. When you throw in price point and the accommodation on offer, it all adds up to an event that carnt be missed.

Tracey Netherton

I’ve attended quite a few training seminars over the years and haven’t always found them to be welcoming. What a difference with the FBMA weekend! The atmosphere, the variety of styles providing the opportunity to cherry pick to add to your skill-set, the encouragement of the highly proficient instructors for students at every level of their journey, and the networking opportunities all add up to create one of the best seminars I’ve been on. Expect to work hard, be open to learning something new, and laugh a lot! - Tracey Netherton

David Sibley

I went to my first FBMA All Styles Training Camp in September 2019 and I have been to everyone since. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to teach sessions at the last 5 camps and brought my daughter (aged 9) to the last 4. We both absolutely love our time away at these camps. Some of my students have also come and have equally enjoyed themselves. FBMA All Styles Training camp is a really welcoming, friendly, and fun environment with top class instructors from across the country. They are suitable for all ages, experience and fitness levels. I have come away from every training camp having learned a lot and eager to return. It also represents exceptional value for money and is a good break away in a wonderful location and with the use of the leisure facilities. Richard and his team have really created something special, and I cannot wait to attend the 10th Anniversary event in March 24.

I was a delayed starter in my late 20s, The benefits and life skills in martial arts have shaped and defined my life for the past 20+ years. One of my biggest joys is the ability to give back, both within our own school and with the creation of the FBMA Training Weekend, Friday & Saturday you'll normally see me running around making sure everything is running smoothly, on Sunday I get chance to take to the mats. With Black Belts in 3 disciplines, you may get the taste of Taekwondo, Hapkido or Krav Maga.

Ian Cleveland

Hi, my name is Ian Cleveland and I teach Jujitsu. I call it Japanese Jujitsu as people mostly think of Brazilian Jujitsu and the majority of what I teach is from standing. I have been training for 38 years starting in Katho Ryu Jujitsu with a 4 year spell at Wing Chun. About 4 years ago I put a white belt on again and in addition to my teaching, started learning Kaze Arashi Ryu with Andy Abernethie. My mantra is to constantly question what you do and why you do it. I mainly focus on the principle of harmony within combat, going with the aggressor’s energy rather than fighting against it

I began my Martial Arts journey in 1989 training in Taekwondo and gained my 1st Dan Black belt in 1994. In my late teenage years I became fascinated with learning more about Martial arts and took up training in the Tonfa and Nunchaku. I found both training systems were complimentary to traditional Taekwondo drills and then i started to pass on my knowledge to my fellow students. I am now a 4th Dan in Taekwondo and lead the Weapons training programme at the Dojang Martial Arts centre in Lincoln, as well as assisting with Taekwondo coaching and mentoring my junior Nunchaku leader.

I began my kickboxing training (Lau Gar style) in Stirling in 2003 under multiple kickboxing World Champion Craig Foster. In 2005 I relocated to Dumfries & Galloway and continued my training under Lau Gar Kickboxing and Kung Fu Instructor Bryan Swales. In 2009 I was awarded my 1st Dan by Master Jeremy Yau. I was awarded my 2nd Dan through the CMAA. I have regularly competed over the last 20 years in both light contact and semi contact winning a number of national open titles. I have also competed abroad with WKU Scotland under David Baptist and have fought on fight nights. I trained for several years in Thai boxing to supplement my kickboxing training. For the last 13 years I have run my own freestyle kickboxing club Cold Fury Kickboxing Academy in Dumfries together with my wife Debbie. I am blessed to have an amazing team of instructors around me, many of whom have trained in a wide range of martial arts disciplines and our syllabus reflects this. I encourage my instructors and students to train with other clubs/styles and bring their learning back into the club. Indeed, this is a requirement for senior gradings.
